Over the span of two years, Orenstein spoke to hundreds of boys across the United States, ranging in age from their early teens to mids and spanning all races, socioeconomic backgrounds, religious beliefs and even sexual orientations. According to the latest data by the General Social Survey, men between the ages of 18 and 29 are having less sex than ever; the number of abstinent men has nearly tripled in the last decade, from 10 percent in to 28 percent last year. This paralyzing fear of sexual inadequacy begins for many boys with online pornography. They made it seem so convincing. Dylan, 17, is a high-school junior in Northern California.
We like to think of school as a place where young people are safe, and of home as a place of refuge, but the reality is far more serious. A few months ago, in a school workshop session about sexism, gender stereotypes and future aspirations, I asked a group of children aged 13 and 14 how their lives might be different if they were the opposite sex. I expected some illuminating responses about clothes and hobbies, socially expected behaviours, perhaps likes and dislikes.

This week it came to light that when Lena Dunham was 7 years old, she looked at her little sister's vagina, and an alarming number of people have dubbed her a "child molester. I'm shaking my head in disbelief as I write because I can't believe that such innocuous things have become the subject of so much vitriol. If I had a penny for all of the sexual organs I looked at as a child, I'd be rich. OK, maybe I'd only have an extra ten or so dollars, but you know what I mean. Children are naturally inquisitive. They are fascinated by the weird things they begin discovering on their bodies. Children often do not identify these things sexually, or have a sexual intent when exploring themselves and others.
